< opinion and conjecture > Microsoft has in the past kept two version of an exam available at once. This means that the VFP6 could be available until the VFP8 is almost out the door. This could mean years. But this is just a guess.

Also one can look at certification in two lights. One is that you have a current certification. This can expire. The other is that you earned a certification on a particular date. This can't be taken away. Both have merit.
