I just re-read the original problem. Seems like if they lied, they would get killed because they would have their hat colour wrong.

Maybe the sages should say heck with the hats and gang up on the people who want to kill them for such a silly reason. LOL!

I guess I'm neither simple-minded nor a ten year old since I haven't a clue. :)
