That's actually a feature :-) Really, when you add records to a buffered table using table buffering ( vs. row buffering!), each added record is added w/ a negative record number. -1, -2, and so on, until you do a tableupdate. That's good, because you can check to see if it's a brand new record causing an error, for example.
