I don't think you should base your decision on which company will "rule the market" but moreover which database is better suited for your needs.

Let's face it Kevin, both Oracle and MS/SQL Server are not going anywhere - they may lose market share to one another or have poor revenue periods but they will both remain strong db products in the foreseeable future. Both have a very loyal following, especially Oracle.

Even DB2 and Sybase have very solid markets so choosing one of those "black sheep" would be a sound investment, although I can't see why someone would want to do such a thing when there's Oracle and SQL Server!
