Also, do you happen to know, if the person who installed this instance of SQL did not turn off named pipes, can that be changed?

However, now I'm trying to work with a server that someone else installed, and when I try to setup workstations to connect to it attach to it through ODBC I get the following error:

You have to install the client tools on the workstation and setup the connection to use what ever you've selected (most likely TCP/IP).
