Dean,

I'm using MSDE and I'm very enthousiastic about it. It is stable, really fast (I suppose if you have enough RAM) and you can move your DB to SQL7 or 2000 without *ANY* modification.

With VFP you have mainly 2 choices on how to use MSDE, remote views and SQL passthrough. Though discussed over and over here on UT, they both have their place and I use them both.

To answer to your question ; go for it, you won't regret.

For me the main problem was, that thinking CS if different than using a local VFP, especially concerning the user interface.
Example : the main reasons in VFP to use indexes, is for changing the working order, for seeking and for speeding up queries. The first reason (changing working order) drops under CS. In my case (as before I depended a lot on indexes for my UI), I had to create a new UI concept.
