Woter,
I wouldn't use this work around. I also think the problem is in table referencing an if() somewhere (index key, default value, stored procs, trigs etc).
If the problem was an index key it would error for the first time only. From there on your index expression would be 'quoted' and return the same value always (use myTable then list status to check indexes).
