I was paid $7,000/year to do biochemistry research in grad school. When I began my first teaching job at York College my salary was $5,000/year :( I knew then I wouldn't be in teaching as a career for the rest of my life, but only as long as I could afford to make the sacrifices. There came a time when the welfare of my children (adequate health care, educational opportunities) prevailed and I left teaching. I really loved to teach, though, primarily because teaching at the college level requires that you stay on the front edge of knowledge and research, which I throughly enjoyed doing, and passing what I learned on to the students.
