>>The South Siders can't seem to get over .500. If they could they might be able to contend. Oh well, all the members of CUBS will have to wait another year (Chicagoans United for a Baseball Series, as in World).:-)

I think that the Cubs fans will be so happy to get there, that it won't bother them in the least. Folks on the south side will be pissed if the Cubs make it.

The vast majority, if not 99%, of the people in Chicago love one of the teams and absolutely hate the other. I'm an exception. I pull for both. The reason is that I grew up on the South Side (near Hyde Park Blvd., AKA South 51st Street, on Blackstone Ave.). The apartment my parents and I lived in was right across the street from where the club housed most of the players (and when school was out, their families) during the season (this was late 1950s, early 1960s). I used to get all kinds of "goodies" from the players and other people who worked for the Sox, as well as playing with the player's kids. I grew up a Cub fan, however, but in view of the above I can't "hate" the Sox.

I've come to the conclusion that the reason is twofold. First, WGN TV used to carry all the home games of the Cubs and Sox, except the night games, which couldn't be televised because of limitations in the TV technology at the time. Since the Cubs only played day games and the Sox played both day and night, I saw the Cubs more often. Second, the Cubs had Ernie Banks and he hit homeruns. The Sox had Luis Aparicio and he stole bases. To a ten year old kid, a homerun is much more exciting.< s >
