What you understand is correct. You can set it up so your users can rebuild your indexes including Primary Keys and Foreign Keys [persistent relationships or RI]. You can also use it to synchronize any changes you make in table structures, indexes or views with the data at your client sites.
The only thing it will not do as for as repairing is it will not repair any corrupted data. It will repair damaged file headers.
The learning curve is fairly easy, and the documentation that comes with it is quite good.
I do use SDT in all my apps.
