>I think you're misunderstanding me... I _want_ to pass the parameter. The problem is the old code gets the parameter and doesn't have a corresponding PARAMETER line, so it chokes. I want the old code to just ignore it. The new code will know what to do with the parameter.

Nope, you can't get around it. You're going to have to retrofit the old code.
