I had a like problem. Just as a caution, we had 250 users and the network admin people had everyone going into a single temp directory on the server where they could delete any unused temp files with one easy command. Problem was that the temp file names were using a sys() function to generate the temp file names. The function uses the system clock as a seed to generate the random name. The user machines were all synced to the system clock. Users were getting "file in use by another" messages because the various systems would create the same file name and try to access a file created and belonging to a different user. Also, at one time we foung 1900 files in the directory -- no wonder things were slow. Just be careful where the temp files go -- and also make sure there is enough disk space for all the data and multiple files you are generating.
