I've seen this be a performance problem with Norton, regardless of the OS. Tweaking Norton's configuration a little goes a long way to address I/O performance over the network.

Thanks Jon. We just did a random selection of 10 machines, which are supposed to be excluding the data directories anyways and found that 4 of them were still scanning them.

That could help our problem also.
