Hi Andrews,

All UPC barcodes are very carefully controlled by the Uniform Code Council. They do this so that no confusion and duplication can occur between UPC marked products. The use of these codes requires a UCC registration. Does your customer have this registration? I always recommend to NEVER use UPC coding unless on a properly registered product. Let me know if this is a true UPC application and I will help you with the requirements (UPC requires sizes, aspect ratios, ect... to be within some tight specs). By the way, the reason your printed barcode will not scan is probably because you have not included the required start, stop, and checksum characters. Most modern barcode scanners do a very good job of decoding all but the poorest printed barcode, but if the do scan, the data has to meet syntax and error checking requirements for the scanner to "beep" that all is OK.

If you do not require UPC coding, you may want try code38 or code128. Code38 font is available free at many sites and only requires you to add an "*" before and after your string to encode the barcode (i.e. the string "A12345" should be sent to the font as "*A12345*"). Code38 does NOT have built-in error checking because it does not contain any checksum info. Code128 is much more compact, and includes checksum info to error check the barcode read. I have never found any code128 fonts that are freeware, but I have had very good luck with Azalea barcode fonts (www.azalea.com). The Azalea site also has code examples to help you compute the checksums, start digits, ect... to get you started. Please search on "barcode" here at UT in the last year, we have discussed some of these points in greater detail.

If you need any other help just let me know, I've been there myself!
Good Luck!
