>With your reassurance I'll give it another shot. Have you actually done this with an app you know requires more than 150 files open?
Just tried it again - set it to 150, then 180 - no joy. Move the exact same code to a win98 box with FILES=200 in the config.sys and all is well. On ME got the message 'too many files open'
After running msconfig, making the changes and hitting apply, I am told I need to reboot, of course, for changes to take effect. On reboot I get a message saying I am running in a configuration troubleshooting mode (with an option to not show this dialog again) I guess that is just to remind me I've changed settings in the system.ini.
In any case, checking system.ini shows my changes took effect - just to no effect.

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy
Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.
-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
