I don't know how others do it, but the first thing I do (if the answer doesn't jump out at me) is separate the vowels from the consonants and list each in alphabetical order. Then, I start playing, paying special attention to blends and other familiar patterns.

So, if I wanted to anagram "Visual FoxPro," I'd start by writing:

AIOOU
FLPRSVX

In trying to come up with an answer, I'd look hard at these combinations:

FL, FR, PL, PR, RP, RL, SP, SL, ...
