If you still want to do it yourself, I suggest writing a tool to create the trigger. Wrap all the columns within IF UPDATE(). I don't think you should try to do any looping with a trigger.

Also remember that triggers are fired once no matter the number of rows that are modified. Your logging routine should be able to handle multiple rows.
