First the obvious: (this is on an NT4 server)
Use Windows update to find anything new, like service packs.
Install the service packs (SP6), then the hotfix rollup, then the newer hotfixes. (Whenever a new major MS software package is installed, rerun the latest service pack and the hotfix rollup and then the newer hotfixes.)
Subscribe to MS security bulletins to get any info ASAP.
Subscribe to and use Symantec's security site.
Visit each MS site for vulnerable software - those which have an Internet interface: IIS, Exchange, SQL Server, etc...
Use the hotfix checker which accesses a file at MS via XML and determines whether all the latest hotfixes are installed. It supplies info to find the uninstalled hotfixes.
I'm sure there is more. I would like to find anit virus and software firewalls designed for NT4 but haven't gotten this far yet.
