I am in exactly the same situation and for a *long* time (years) tried to do what you said. In fact, I wrote a migrator program that does a lot of the conversion. I can give you a copy if you wish.

In the end, I am doing what many told me: redesigning the product. It is not a happy decision, as it will take me a long time, but I think (hope) the effort will be worth it.
