If you can get the June 2001 issue of FoxPro Advisor. There is an encryption class that works extremely well. It will not necessarily meet your same length criteris which, IMHO is a bad security idea. It does however return a 4 character code. Most password [those that are the most secure] only store the encrypted string and the passwords entered by the users are encrypted then compared to the encrypted string. This is why system administrators can not determine what a user's password is and why they just have to assign you a new one when you forget yours.

The article summary can be found at http://www.advisor.com/Articles.nsf/aid/JENTR02

You will also want to get the resource CD which will have the code on it.
