I'll offer my simplified opinion on this, Peter. . .

Hate is a tool, most often used by leaders when they have little else to offer.

The governments of the middle east control ALL radio and television broadcasting save for one very new television station based in Yemen.

The creation of Israel (1948?) by partitioning the country of Palestine resulted in the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands(?) of Palestinians. That partitioning was done by 'outsiders' under heavy protest by virtually all countries of the region.

Those countries made two futile attempts to iradicate Israel in 1967 and 1973(?). In the 1967 war Israel gained land that at least tripled its land mass and included virtually all of the land that was the other partition of the 1948 creation. The Israelis held on to that land to afford a better defensive position and also to keep their "spiritual capital" of Jerusalem.
Israel's success was largely attributed to American support in the form of arms and money. The USSR was known to supply arms and military support to (most of) the Arab countries, more so for the 1973 attempt.

After over 30 years Egypt finally made peace with Israel and more recently Jordan has come close. The other countries have not and have used their radio and television to promote hatred for Israel and, by extension, because of the unqualified support of Israel by the U.S., the U.S. too.

Consistent repetition of a message along with visible 'truth' (television images with a twisted description) is a very powerful way to grow hatred.
