They take a look at what was news five, ten and 20 years ago to see the difference between what we have now and back then. This is just one of those cases. For example in a car magazine it would have in the 15 years ago spot they might be announcing the new 1986 Dodge Dingel with powerdrive. It is like that I think.
I remember seeing a science article about a man who was alone on an island, stationed there for weather measurement or so, and he was measuring the amount of hair on each shave - sort of a side project. His girlfriend was bringing him supplies monthly, and he noticed that the weight of the beard grew higher when her arrival was approaching, which led to some insights in hormone field.
Fine, but I read the exactly same article twice: once when I was about 8, and once when I was about 40 :). They brought a 30 year old thing as science news :).
