a person could make a lot of observations on this topic:

don't think i've ever seen a message here (authored by a person
whose native language is not american english) that i couldn't fathom
because it contained spelling, grammatical, or semantic
errors. well, at least no more so than with messages authored by
citizens of the continental u.s. and canada.

for sure, fernando, your english is better than my portugese !

often-times, these spelling/grammar/semantic errors and literal
translations are comic, but certainly not for ridicule. having studied
latin, french, and german, i sometimes see an advantage or preference
in the expressions constructed by the 'foreigner' over the equivalent
or 'correct' english expression. it seems knowledge of second
language unavoidably affects one's usage of both languages.

as far as i know, we don't have a committee equivalent to the Parisian
committee to 'keep the language pure' !!

i admire your compunction to jump right in and use the language.
