A friend of mine had a security incident at Toronto airport last year.
He was staying at my place to work a contract here, so I gave him a pair of keys on a key-chain that my son had given to me years ago as his first-ever own-purchased gift to me. It was a little toy pistol/cap-gun exactly 1 inch from barrel tip to handle end. It had a chamber for a single cap and the barrel itself was non-hollow.
He was sent to work a day in Winnipeg and booked a flight. At the airport, when friend got to security he put his change, keys, etc. into the tray. He was taken aside and told to check the key chain or ditch it. He would not be allowed on the plane otherwise.

Even today that seems a tad excessive to me. But it does show that Toronto had at least some security.
