The approach I took to this requirement was to store the original word documents in a directory and reference the path/document in a SQL Server field. I was not worried about diskspace - only problems down the road. I also included the free Microsoft word reader with each installation for those who do not have word installed on his/her computer.

My requirements may have been different that yours.
