Hi jozef,

>I agree that it would be nice to have SET ENGINE TO SQL SERVER command in VFPx.
>A I know there are such possiblities for Clipper compiler.
>In Poland for example one can buy library MEDIATOR. With MEDIATOR, programs written in Clipper can write to SQL Server or Oracle DATABASE trough Clipper RDD architecure, and there are a few changes in Code requiered. MEDIATOR advertisements are sponsored by Microsoft. I don't know how efficent are such programs in practice.

I'm not familiar with the product, so I can't judge. But it is of real importance that all VFP dml commands (such as REPLACE, INSERT, APPEND FROM, and SQL SELECT) will be executed on the server rahter than the VFP application or else it will not be much different from using remote views.

The longer I think about this. Transparency of ENGINES would be a MAJOR enhancement.

Walter,

>>>Walter, let me add my pet wish to your excellent list: I wish I could say SET ENGINE TO SQL SERVER and be able to read/write that data transparently from VFP with all VFP commands (SCAN, REPLACE, in line SQL SELECT, etc.).
>>>
>>>That would be a jump as jaw dropping as those Al Doman mentioned for FoxBase over dBase (6X faster), FoxPro 1.0 (windowing under DOS), and FoxPro 2.0 (SQL SELECT). Everybody would have to buy it, not just current VFP users. It would drive SQL Server sales too.
>>>
>>>Yes I know SQL Server is set oriented and VFP is not, but it would still be wonderful. It would open the future for us with our current skill set and pair SQL Server with an excellent front end.
>>
>>That would indeed be wonderfull, if the DML-commands could be processed on the server. Yes indeed this kind of enhancements is what I (and apperently Al also) want to see. On the other side, this seems a real difficult one to implement since the nature of both languages is totally different. However, I must admit, that if this is going to be implemented in some way, this would be a heavy knock to the compitition. In some way, I think this would be to some webservices, because they won't be needed anymore.
