I'll add an 'I agree' here with Cindy: split the entry into dd, mmm and yyyy fields, if you have control over the HTML form: I've just done this for a client with sites in the UK, Germany, The Netherlands, France and (possibly) Japan (help!) with differing date standards (in the company's branches if not the countries). They also wanted to be able to type, say JUN or 6 or 06 for the month - if it's in separate fields it is a LOT easier to parse. I have some code for the conversions if you want it.

If you haven't got control over the HTML form for getting the input you are stuck with deciding what the date is (dd/mm/yy....and so on).
