The first thing to check, if you're working with any kind of reporting or report preview is if you're using HP printer drivers written & supplied by HP. Many of them are notoriously buggy and cause C5 errors.

One thing to try is to use an equivalent or compatible driver from your Win98 installation CD e.g. you could try a Win98 HP4 driver on an HP5 or HP6 printer.
