Marcia's idea is pretty neat. I have modified her suggested code for the click and double click events of the transparent shape which then activate or select the correct grid row/cell. It works well for the purpose I am looking for.

I have positioned the transparent shape in such a way that it only covers the actual cells and not the grid headers or the grid scroll bars. I only need to trap for click and double click. The grid contains read only data so this solution is perfect.
