The problem isn't with self-joins, but with what I call multiple unrelated children. That's where you have a single parent, but several child tables, with no relationship among the child tables. For example, using TasTrade, imagine a query of Orders where you want to get the Shipper, the Supplier and the Customer. The QD/VD can't handle that.
