Randy,

There's a lot more to it than just a 2GB size limit on the file - there is also the record limit due to the 32-bit integer. I definitely believe the statement that overcoming this would require a major rewrite.

I believe it too!

> Also, on the client-server type of implementation, didn't someone already do something like this witht he existing product? Or maybe that was one of those 'thninking breaks' I had while working with Joe Gotthelf a numberof years ago. We actually did implement a rudimentary C/S data passing system for the project we were working on, in FPD 2.6. Nothing so sophisticated as SQL Server, but it did work and solved the problem at the time.

Well I *do* remember such a described feature being included in a "Fox-Watch" column way way back in "Database Developer" magazine days.

And this one has the attribute of using actual VFP commands/functions/etc. to accomplish the goal, which I think has to be different from your 2.6 implementation.

Thanks for the comments,
Jim Nelson

>>It has been stated several times in many places (and said to be directly from VFP Team members too) that overcoming the 2gig. limit requires a major rewrite of most of VFP.
>>That being the case, I am going to view this as a separate wish. If it hasn't already been submitted I think you should do so.
>>Compression and encryption are interesting ideas, especially given the price/speed of processors available today. I wouldn't see this as "the" way to break the 2gig. limit though, but rather as allowing more than 2gig. of 'real' data to be stored. There would be no statable 'capacity' though because each table would vary in its maximum based on the data and format.
>>The benefits you list are excellent ones and for that reason I feel that it should be a separate wish too.
