Easiest way to do is buy a BarCode Printer.

It will provide a user handbook how to create UPC, EAN, Code 93, Code 128..
20+ Barcode font in low level control.

Thus, you don't need to buy any barcode font.
and it will make the check digit automatically, you don't need formula to do. :)
but of cos the running cost increase.

Most Barcode printer use Heat to print the barcode on labels.

UPC and EAN are formal Barcode for reseller, you need to register those UPC you need to print.
Else you may against law.

Luckly both UPC and EAN are digit only barcode,
the range to read for 0.25 mm is already accept 4-6 inches far.
(Shortest is 0.125, then its multiples.. 0.25, 0.375, 0.5 ...)

but if use Code 128 or Code 93, the readable length will be shorten to 3-4 inches.

After you buy a barcode printer, you can try this link:
