If I do browse I can that the query is working and correct results appear. Next, in the report I name the detail line field that same as the field in the query (example fname). When I preview the report, it doesn't display any information from the cursor. I have been trying to make this work for 3 days now, but it still doesn't work. I am missing a step some where?

Nick,
Since when a 'select ... into cursor ... ' by default sets current work area to that of cursors you don't need 'select (cName)' there. However that's not the point.
Would you check if your report dataenvironment has some table in it ?
