There's a bug which will bleed the shape's color to the background color of some unselected controls - I've experienced that with listboxes and combos. The easiest way to check this is to set your shapes to some weird color and see if your textboxes get the same color.

Definately not related, but... I think you should define "weird color." For myself, I think white is a bit weird as it encompasses all the colors of the spectrum... :-)
