i was under the impression that your top level form had to be
a modeless form. i've never been able to have it work any other
way either.

FWIW. and i haven't tried this ... but if the form really MUST
be modal for some reason, instead of calling the form from a main
program, where the main program is the MAIN object of your project,
set the form to be the MAIN object of your project and call your
code (your "main program") from within the Load event or Init event
of the form.
