It is true they stayed in the aircraft.

Whether that equals courage is another matter altogether. If one of the terrorists had fought two others to keep the plane from hitting the tower that would seem more courageous than what actually happened.

Often it is harder to live than it is to die.

We do not label irrational individuals as "courageous" based upon a demonstration of their irrationality, which driving an airplane into a building surely is.

If we take this position then I suppose we must label the individual who wanders into a restaurant with 20 lbs of plastique or some other high explosive attached to themselves and detonates that explosive in order to kill as many others (along with themselves) as "courageous".

If we do then I would suggest a re-reading of "Animal Farm" and "1984".
