Hi John,

It really does work....I have found that when I go to a client or even the "management" here that if I ask them what we should do, or worse, ask them what they think--then they get that ashen horrified face that says "I'm going to be responsible for this if it's wrong" and they will delay progress for weeks while they play politics. The most difficult thing to deal with is management who have no knowledge of software development or how to work with clients. They bring in someone with an MBA or the big PHD to "manage" software developers and clients. It has never worked. The only thing I find that works is when I shoulder the responsibility of searching out the best way to do something, and telling them (mgmt or client) that I have found the best way to go and that I will be there to make it work. Displaying an eagerness to learn and be cutting edge is comforting to those about to pay a lot of money for something to run their business on. I have to function as if I own the business myself and have a relationship with the clients as if they were my own. I am here an hour before start time every day to just read through all the postings here on the Thread and a couple hours after work is over to continue to study and find out where I should be a year or two from now. They have tried over and over again to make me management, my title is actually Group Manager. All that really means is that I try to help those who work me in finding out how to do things. It does however allow me to be the one to tell them what we will use. That is a beautiful thing !!!

Who needs a PHD teaching me inter-office politics. A PHD for a non-technical management level person trying to lead software geeks stands for one thing in my book: Post Hole Digger................

Have a great day !!!

>Hmmm....that's a technique I'll have to try: Telling people what version they are going to use :-)

>>Thanks John, I am actually starting work on it today in glorious 7 !!!

>>After getting word that I could do this, I told everyone involved that I was going to finish it off in 7 and be on the cutting edge. I decided to tell them instead of ask them, that seemed to work rather well.

>>Onwards to 7.0 I go, may the schwartz be with me......
