Well, this should work quickly because index is used, unless you have really large number of records in the child table and access it through network. This is because index is downloaded through the network to filter out records, even when you display little number of records in child table, index could be larger if the entire table is large.

I do not see other reasons of slow down. It might be also that grid refreshing slowly (somethign in grid layout like use of Dynamic* properties of column cause slow refreshing, for example).
