Carmel, once you have your EXE again, try to remove the virusscanner just in order to check whether this causes your problem. Note that your compiled EXE will be seen as such by the virusscanner and for sure will slow down things, while your FXP's won't (DO from the command window).

Also note that there may be a difference between the EXE on the network needing (maybe) large piles of program-blocks to be downloaded to the desktop, and the FXP's always being small parts (just as well downloaded but in smaller pieces).
Check where you VFPxxx.DLL is; it may be on the network (?) which is not good for improving performance ...
