I've just had a similar experience where I was trying to rebuild a form from a backup copy (and didn't want to rewrite all the new stuff). I thought just copying code between the SCX files would be enough, but the compiled code didn't change unless I made the changes in the Form Designer. I don't think knowing this helps you, but we can at least commiserate...
