We once had two PDP's next to each other, and tried to network them. The scheme was eventually known as "DEC nyet", i.e. the best I got was to log into the other machine, but couldn't even copy a file. The machines were networked in a hardware manner, though - the tape streamer for machine A was powered and housed in machine B's box, and B's second disk was in A's box.

We eventually got them on narrow track network - excatly one inch narrow. When we needed something from one machine to another, we had to use the tapes.

We also had another PDP in a different building, and a VAX in the central, and had base band modems (sized as flatbed scanners), hoping to network it all. Never worked - DEC nyet.
