If you meant generating image on the fly and using it in report - yes, it could be slow.
You can use General field and MS WordArt object from Microsoft Office in the Word document placed in General field. In the Word you can insert such opject using Insert->Picture->WordArt... menu item. Let me know if this is good for you, General fields with Word are not that slow and Word allow to modify content on the fly.
