Source Control is a great help, even for a single programmer. Perforce is free for 1-2 programmers, but it costs money for more.

Although my programming team consists of exactly one programmer, I wouldn't want to work without VSS - or an alternative version control program.
I assume there are freeware options available for more than 2 programmers, as well. You might search at
www.download.com.
