To add to what Erik said, I do not use MEM files. I store any variables I need at app startup in a table. Others may use the registry or an INI file. At app startup, we retrieve any startup information from where ever we stored it and usually populate properties of a global app object. Any memory variable I use are method specific and lose scope as soon as the method runs. Of course my global app object is a memory variable reference and persists for the life of the app as do a couple of other private variables that I have to use, like SDT, so they are visible to all objects run during the app.
