I never solved this one using mailmerge. Instead I used OLE Automation to update a Word file template. The 'child' records were listed in a table which was expanded from one to as many as necessary 'on the fly'.

In my case I needed a separate document for each letter, so I printed each as it was done, printed the corresponding envelope, saved it and opened a new one for the next 'parent' record.
