There are no other way but scanning all folders (that also could take a time). Windows system cannot tell total number of folders just quickly as if it stores that value somewhere on the disk. Probably other systems too, because sequrity and many other issues.
Usually, search progress displays just total number of files scanned and their size scanned so user can compare it to the total size of files on disk to see how far from the finish search is currently works. However, for search only in subfolder it is also problematic.
