The idea, by itself, isn't bad, IMO. dBASE III had some sort of evaluation version (?) or student edition (?) with severe record limitations (it wouldn't allow you to create more than 100 records, if I remember correctly).
Some key features might be disabled or severely restricted in a trial edition (especially data: records per table, bytes per table, tables per database, ..., or programmatically: number of variables, etc.).
