I would add to your suggestion that as each sub folder gets processed that its number of folders is added to the grand total number of folders. In this way the progress bar will tend to move forwards during the processing of the current folder and then step backwards when the next folder is started. The advantage is that a correctly programmed progress bar will continue to show the 'best estimate as at this time' status and will finally end correctly at 100% when all folders are done.
