We experience this too. Seems to have to do with the OS. Both NT and 2000 seem to have this effect while Novell does not.

There are a lot of good suggestions in this thread on things that do speed up startup and response times. Slow opening of the files however, isn't something we've found a way around (except for using Novell).

Once the files are opened, using them seems to be quite fast.
