Yeah, a week after I got my permit, Dad said, "We're going to Chicago, and you're driving!" After 30 miles on the inbound Ike, I thought my left foot was permanently attached to the floor mat. Like you say, Chicagoans have mastered it, but, boy when you've got 5 feet in front and behind you the first time, you feel like you're next door neighbors!
